The higher-level objective of the BIP, to which the project contributes, is to promote sustainable land use and improved forest management in the Cerrado, the second largest biome in Brazil and South America, leading to reduced pressure on its remaining forests, reduced GHG emissions and increased CO2 sequestration. The Project is a result of the collaboration amongst the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA), the Brazilian Forest Service (SFB), the National Rural Learning Service (SENAR), and the German Technical Cooperation Agency (GIZ); and with technical collaboration of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) and the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA). The Project Components and overall implementation status are: 6/27/2022 Page 1 of 8 The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Integrated Landscape Management in the Cerrado Biome Project (P164602) Component 1: Institutional Development and Capacity Building for Landscape Management. Supporting the development of capacities at the national and local levels to plan and implement a landscape approach in the selected watersheds. The first major result of the component was the selection of 15 priority watersheds, from among the 53 identified preliminarily, in seven states: Bahia, Goiás, Maranhão, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso and Tocantins. Some smaller watersheds in Mato Grosso and Goiás states were grouped with others, so that today the project is working in ten target watersheds. The Project is also supporting studies and Rural Environmental Cadaster System (SICAR) improvements, and also an evaluation on the Brazilian low carbon agriculture plan from MAPA (ABC Plan). Additionally, equipment to strengthening INPE, EMBRAPA and SFB were acquired and installed to date, INPE/Embrapa have finalized mapping land use and land cover in the Cerrado Biome for 2018 (TerraClass 2018). TerraClass 2018 was launched in June, 2021. TerraClass aims to map classes of use and land cover (secondary vegetation, agriculture, livestock, mosaic occupation, forestry, urban areas) in all states of the Cerrado Biome. Component 2: Mainstreaming Landscape Practices into Selected Watersheds. Promoting the adoption of low-carbon emission agricultural practices and restoration practices within private landholdings and help improve production efficiency and environmental compliance. To date, 189 long-term consultants are hired to provide technical assistance in the field and interviews were made with agricultural producers to identify potential project beneficiaries. Face-to-face and virtual training activities were held, including on Bank social and environmental safeguards policies. Field activities have been re-initiated since 2020/2021, and the implementation pace is being accelerated. SENAR had made a first contact with 8,357 landholdings to evaluate interest in the participating in the project. A questionnaire was applied in some 5,600 holdings by permanent field technicians of SENAR as basis for the selection of participants. Only properties (not leased holdings) with ranching as a principal activity, located in a priority watershed, were selected. Overall, 5,446 holdings were registered by SENAR, of which 4,778 of which have received at least one field visit by a rural assistance agent. Not all of these, however, have been participating actively in the project. Currently (March 2022), there are circa of 2,900 holdings adopting low carbon agriculture practices. Component 3: Project Management, Monitoring, Evaluation and Communication. The Project coordination is successfully carrying out all managerial and operational procedures as well as inter-institutional communication needed to coordinate, implement and monitor the Project. The project communication plan is prepared and under implementation. This indicator considered the total number of identified producers which have areas where conservation, restoration a practices are being implemented. Comments: As part of the mid term review, this indicator is currently being disaggregated by type of conservation and restoration due to a discrepancy in the beneficiaries rural properties areas that might lead to misinterpretations. The following conservation or restoration practices are envisaged: Restoration Plans (PRAs) approved; RL and APP maintenance and/or enrichment; fencing; natural regeneration; assisted regeneration; planting or direct seeding of native or non-native tree species; silvicultural systems; erosion control; terraces; runoff management; invasive species control; fertilization; disturbance removal; fuel reduction by mechanical means; re- introduction of prescribed fire; fire surrogates. The Project aims for at least 25 percent of all participants in rural-extension and technical-assistance services to be female-headed landholdings. The expected average area where conservation and/or restoration practices have been adopted per landholding is 2 ha, for an average landholding area of 300 ha. Related to FAP indicator: Land users adopting sustainable land management practices as a result of the Project. Relates to CPF indicators: number of landholdings adopting landscape management and/or sustainable agricultural practices as a result of WBG support; Comments: number of properties where RLs and/or APPs are implemented and/or land restoration is adopted. The teams have prepared the action plan for the first 3 priority areas. SENAR has completed the survey of landowners in one of the priority areas, but technical assistance visits had been put on hold due to the new corona virus outbreak, form March to May. Since June 2020, few field visits have re-initiated, but the implementation pace has been slowed down following local legal restrictions to prevent COVID 19 contamination and by the request of farmers. This indicator monitoring methodology was reformulated to better reflect its achievement and handle the amount of data being generated by the Project. Thus, there was a significant decrease in the value reported from November, 2020, to May, 2021. This decrease impacted the gender-disaggregated data from this indicator as well. The UGP is recalculating the previous values of the indicator achievements as part of the Mid Term Review activities.
