Overall, 150 project schools have been rehabilitated, and around 45,000 children are already benefiting from the improved learning environment; 6,000 of those students are from closed and reorganized schools. In addition, civil works are ongoing in 19 schools, and plans are underway for civil works in nine more schools. Equipment in schools. The Project has delivered school equipment for 75 chemistry, 69 biology, and 53 physics laboratories. Further deliveries are planned for 81 physics, 72 chemistry, and 70 biology classrooms. The impact of the Project on student learning in Belarus. The project is focused on one of the most pressing issues in education in Belarus, the quality of learning in the most remote areas of the country. While Belarus is optimizing its school network, many students from remote villages where schools were closed have to travel long distances to school by bus or other means of transportation. Hub schools serve students in surrounding villages up to 15 kilometers away. While the learning outcomes are drastically different between rural and urban students in Belarus, it is even more striking for students that need to travel long distances to schools. Therefore, creating better opportunities for such students was one of the objectives of the project. Among those students already learning in schools rehabilitated under this project, more than 6,000 students are from closed/reorganized schools. The project also supports two rounds of participation of Belarus in the international assessment of student learning, the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). The first time Belarus participated in PISA was in 2018, joining the Human Capital Project of the World Bank. Currently, Belarus is preparing to participate in PISA 2022, and last year successfully conducted the pilot. The project brings about change in Mogilev and Vitebsk oblasts where schools are piloting the new approach to science education in scientific laboratory clusters, enabling better science education as well as bringing schools closer to communities and creating socio-cultural centers in schools. The country has conducted the baseline study of the learning environments - School User Survey. Results will be published soon.
