Morocco Noor-Ouarzazate Concentrated Solar Power Description Country Challenge Purpose: To replace fossil fuel-based electricity with Morocco has achieved strong economic growth and stability solar power. over the past decade. This has resulted in a substantial Expected Results (include): expansion of its energy demand which has been met by • 410 MW in new renewable capacity installed. importing oil at an annual cost of US$80 billion with • 1,638 GWh of solar power produced annually. • 522,000 metric tons of CO2eq. emissions avoided consequent emissions of greenhouse gases. annually. Project Goals IBRD Financing: $400 Million IBRD, other development banks, and bilateral agencies are supporting three phases of the Noor-Ouarzazate Complex which uses state-of-the-art concentrated solar power technology. The components of the Complex being supported are: Noor I – 160 MW under construction; and, Noor II and III, with a combined capacity of 250 MW to be built by private sponsors. The $400 million IBRD loan finances part of the construction costs and the government’s utility power purchases. © World Bank For more information: http://www.worldbank.org/projects/P122028/ma-ouarzazate-concentrated-solar-power?lang=en and http://www.worldbank.org/projects/P131256?lang=en 88
