It focuses on four priority protected areas (PAs) including the Mikumi National Park (MINAPA), Nyerere National Park (NNP), Ruaha National Park (RUNAPA), and Udzungwa National Park (UMNP) and is jointly implemented by two main agencies: Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism (MNRT) and Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA). Other implementing partners include Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI), Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB), Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS), National Irrigation Commission (NIRC), and Rufiji Basin Water Board (RBWB). 12/22/2020 Page 1 of 12 The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Tanzania: Resilient Natural Resource Management for Tourism and Growth (P150523) The implementation of the project has experienced some delays including those related to COVID-19 travel disruptions which affected execution of key activities. However, the pace of implementation has improved with contracts for the design of (a) roads, trails and bridges, and (b) staff houses and tourist amenities in Ruaha, Udzungwa and Mikumi now under implementation. In addition, patrol equipment and 23 light vehicles to enhance management capacity in national parks have been delivered and were officially handed over to TANAPA on August 27, 2020, with another 9 having been delivered in September 2020 and were handed over to TANAPA on November 11, 2020. The vehicles are being used for patrols and park management in the Mikumi, Ruaha, and Udzungwa national parks.. Additional vehicles for enhancing management capacity in Nyerere National Park should be delivered in the next few months. 28-Sep-2023 Overall Comments PDO Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E): The project has an M&E focal point, and the M&E technical working group is functional and ensuring the adoption of the M&E plan. The PCU Coordinator is responsible for providing additional support to enhance the M&E capacity at the ministry and other implementing agencies. The yearly M&E progress report for the period 2019/2020 presented in August 2020 has been reviewed by the WB and suggested changes to the format of the report are being included by the REGROW Team. The M&E technical group will play a more proactive role in supporting the project coordination in the monitoring of processes/activities to ensure more efficient performance. During the proposed project restructuring scheduled for February 2021, the results framework including the PDO and intermediate results indicators will need to be reviewed and adjusted due to the elapsed project implementation time, the re-designation of protection of the Selous Game Reserve, and the COVID-19 related impact on travel and tourism to the 4 targeted parks.
