Overall, ACEs made a steady progress and continued to achieve targets. In total, 2,287 master students (of which, 40 percent are female) and 578 PhD students have enrolled (of which, 34 percent are female) to date. About 28 percent of them are regional students. Except for the national 9/9/2020 Page 1 of 9 The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Eastern and Southern Africa Higher Education Centers of Excellence (P151847) and regional female PhD student enrollment, all the PDO level and Component 1 targets were achieved by the ACEs. Moreover, a few centers recently received the international accreditation for their programs, which has been a challenge for many ACEs. For instance, the Centre of Excellence in Phytochemicals Textiles and Renewable Energy (CESAAM) from Egerton University achieved the international accreditation by being recognized by Virginia Tech in the U.S. for their MSc program in agribusiness and crop protection. University of Rwanda's ACE in Data Science had their programs accredited by the Data Science Council of America (DASCA) as well. However, the progress of Component 2 and 3, implemented by the Regional Facilitation Unit (RFU), is lagging behind. Especially, the events to foster private sector collaboration have not been implemented consistently. Thus, the RFU is expected to hire an expert on private sector collaboration to facilitate the private sector collaboration for ACEs. In response to the COVID-19 crisis, several ACEs are moving ahead with making alternate arrangements for delivery of coursework through online and other mechanisms. Some challenges are being faced due to connectivity problems which highlights the concern of creating inequities for those in rural areas who may not have access to reliable internet connections. The Bank team is facilitating knowledge sharing activities to help ACEs access potential resources and strategies to adjust to the current situation and build resilience within the system. ACE Task Forces. In collaboration with the ACE-Impact team, several task forces have been formed to come up with ways to support all ACEs across Africa. The thematic areas of these task forces and their goals are described below.  Capacity Building: to organize and coordinate various webinars to provide skills and competencies to teaching staff and students on how to effectively teach and learn online, respectively  Connectivity: to address the bottlenecks which presently hinder virtual connectivity for learning;  Platforms, LMS and Content: to focus on what can be done “now” and as an integral part of the ACE project implementation  Communication: to work collaboratively with the centers in raising awareness and facilitating communication within and between the Centers, partners and key stakeholders. Series of webinars are currently being organized with the objective of enabling university instructors to integrate quality digital resources into their lessons and actively practice online teaching. These webinars provide a general overview of digital education and the resources available through the participating platforms, review essentials of learning strategies (for e.g. blended learning, e-learning etc.), work on pedagogical scenarios of online activities, and discuss ways to evaluate and monitor student learning. The participants from the centers are also animating a class in synchronous and asynchronous communication environments to create a motivating virtual learning environment for students.
