Page 1 of 6 The World Bank Report No: ISR4345 Grid-based Rural Electrification component: The original scope of this component was to electrify 265 rural town and villages throughout the country. Contracts for the procurement of distribution materials for 265 rural towns have been signed. About 70% of the materials have been delivered and the remaining 30% are expected to be shipped by end 2011. Tender documents for distribution materials for connecting an additional 100 rural towns and villages and about 228,000 customers in rural towns and villages are being prepared. It Public Disclosure Copy is expected that most of these materials will be delivered by end 2012, and the second phase of electrification work and customer connections will be completed in 2013. Off Grid Component: The Rural Electrification Fund (REF) has issued a Bid invitation for 25,000 solar home systems. The design and technical specifications for 5 micro hydro schemes are under development. The corresponding environmental and social impact assessments are also under preparation. The REF Operations manual is being revised to facilitate support for import of about 500,000 solar lanterns by private suppliers for low-income rural households.
