Guarantee fees payment due dates: pdoTable Project Development Objectives Project Development Objective (PDO) Project Development Objective (from Project Appraisal Document) The overall project development objective is to facilitate the expansion of electricity supply of hydro-power in Pakistan. The Project would also improve access to socio-economic services for local communities in the project area and build WAPDA’s capacity to prepare future hydropower projects. This would be achieved by installing a 2,160 MW hydropower plant on the main Indus River, which can be expanded to 4,320 MW in future at very low cost. The Project is a “high-risk-high reward” operation aimed at providing low cost non-carbon renewable energy. It will supply 12,225 Giga Watt hour annually and is part of a least-cost solution to mitigate power shortfall and reduce cost of generation in the country. The project comprises of six generating units of 360 MW each as well as 250 km, 765 kilo Volt double circuit transmission line from Dasu to Islamabad. An International Development Association (IDA) credit in the amount of Special Drawing Rights (SDR) 379.7 million (US$588.4 million equivalent) and an IDA Partial Credit Guarantee (PCG) in the amount of US$460 million have been approved by the World Bank for DHP-I. The IDA credit funds are primarily being used for project supervision, implementation of social and environmental management plans, and preparatory works such as relocation of Karakoram Highway (KKH), access roads, offices and colonies. All key contracts for DHP-I are under implementation. Despite delays caused by land acquisition, COVID-19 pandemic, and recent terror attack, the Project is expected to achieve its development objectives. River diversion tunnels are 90 percentage completed. The Additional Financing of US$700 million (as International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) Loan) for Dasu Transmission Line (DTL) was made effective in June 2021. Contractors for DTL are being procured. The World Bank regrets the loss of life due to the tragic incident on July 14, 2021. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. The World Bank is committed to continue to support the Government of Pakistan for ensuring safety and security of the local residents and workers at Dasu and successful completion of the Project that would provide enormous benefits for the people of Pakistan.
