The Presidential Directives on gum Arabic trade liberalization were issued in 2009. The 0.. Directives effectively removed the concession that granted monopolistic power to the Gum Arabic Company on the marketing and export of raw gum Arabic. The floor price policy managed by the Ministry of Foreign Trade was also suspended. The Gum Arabic Board (GAB) was formed soon after, to coordinate implementation of the reform measures and support the revival efforts of the gum Arabic sector. Since then, the Ministry of Finance and National Economy has abolished about 13 of the 18 taxes and charges imposed on Gum Page 1 of 6 ) The World Bank Report No: ISR3661 Arabic, and removed all revenue generated from these taxes/fees from the 2011 national Budget. These reform measures are positively contributing to improving production, prices and income of gum producers. The project conducted effect/impact households assessment in October 2011 in the targeted localities and the main findings pointed out that the aggregated average annual income earned by the GAPA member household in a year was considerably increased. The average is estimated at 8,416 SDG in 2011 as opposed to 5,105 SDG reported in 2010 which means an increase of 64%. There is no doubt that the increase was as a direct result of selling the gum Arabic at a higher price. The Government is committed to facilitating credit access to small Gum producers in major gum Arabic production areas. Further, the Government is investing in rehabilitation of the port, with the aim 0 of reducing the double charge of freight and handling. U The project is continuing to strengthen the capacity of selected Gum Arabic Producers Associations (GAPAs) by improving production, access to new markets and micro-finance and 0 -6 more opportunities for up-to-date knowledge through exchange visits and cross fertilization of ideas. In this regard, the project has been successful in training GAPA members on (i) .U) improved tapping and gum collection techniques, and (ii) management of the saving and revolving credit scheme. Households' income of participating GAPAs members increased by 165 per cent exceeding the end of project target. Women constitute about 20 percent of the members. The project :6 reported that currently there are 6 GAPAs with 100 percent women members.
