In the past three and half years of implementation, 51,000 Cu. M. per day of additional water has been produced in Addis Ababa, Hawassa, and Mekelle through development of new boreholes and spring sources with combined IDA and Borrower financing. About 3000 yard tap connections were provided for selected groups in the low income areas of Addis Ababa and Gondar City. Civil work for Jimma city water supply expansion is in progress with 20% slippage in schedule due to shortage of cement and delay in supply of pipes and fittings. Encouraging progress has been made in the pilot NRW interventions of Addis city. Project supervision needs to be intensified with focus on contract management to ensure that the project is completed on time and within budget. Gondar city has completed well Public Disclosure Copy drilling and obtained estimated volume of 120 l/s from the five wells. However, water supply expansion work requires special attention to secure the budget and commence the civil works. Technical Assitances (TAs) for contract management, and to assist the AAWSA management in the areas of overall utility management are expected to be in place. The French development agency is parallel financing the project with a focus on providing technical assistance in the areas of NRW, design and supervision of treatment plant expansion work, AAWSA staff training, and operational efficiency improvement aspects.
