This 5-year Project, with an estimated cost of US$ 85.89 million, including GEF financing of US$ 15.89 million, will support investments to expand and consolidate the system of protected areas in the Brazilian Amazon region and strengthen mechanisms for its financial sustainability. The Project is expected, inter alia, to create 13.5 million hectares of additional new protected areas, to Page 1 of 6 The World Bank Report No: ISR11282 consolidate 32 million hectares of protected areas and to increase the level of funding for protected areas management. This Project will scale up the work carried during the first phase of the ARPA Program, building on its achievements, innovations and lessons learned. At present, implementation is progressing well, with important initial results for consolidation of existing protected areas and capacity building.
