in particular have very high levels of poverty. In addition, they lag behind in schooling and access
to salaried jobs. Moreover, open defecation among the Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes
in Karnataka is higher than the national average. They also stand out for having poor access to
drinking water in their homes.
