Initial improvements to reinstate water abstraction equipment and in the leak detection and management of the distribution systems have already increased bulk water supply by 20 percent on South Tarawa, home to about half the country’s population. Development of a comprehensive, long-term strategy for conservation and sustainable management of South Tarawa’s critical groundwater reserves has been requested by the Government. The first Page 1 of 6 The World Bank Report No: ISR8112 (Banaba Island) of 11 planned community rainwater harvesting systems has been completed. Planning on both hard (civil works) and soft (environmental buffering) coastal protection measures is well advanced and initial community consultations commenced. The government climate change website has been updated and the contract for a full time climate change adaptation (CCA) and disaster risk reduction (DRR) communications and media officer is about to be awarded. Less progress has been made on the installation of groundwater abstraction systems on North Tarawa and the planned scale up of CCA/DRR small grants scheme and associated preparation of locally managed adaptation plans, Public Disclosure Copy which are currently lagging.
