The Grant was approved by the World Bank Board on May 14, 2020. The Grant Agreement was signed thereafter, and the Grant was declared effective on May 28, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and school closures since mid-March 2020, the distribution of school grants - the main activity under this project - was postponed several times. Thus, the project was restructured to extend the closing date from February 28, 2021, to July 30, 2021. This restructuring allows the project to have sufficient time to distribute the grants to schools and collect data to report on the PDO level indicators. The project made significant progress in the preparatory work for the school grants program. As part of this activity, a federal steering committee was formed. The Project Coordination Unit (PCU) developed and distributed 55,000 copies of the school grant manual to all 16,500 public schools (approximately 3 per school) and prepared and printed 35,000 copies of the grant application. School grant committees were formed at the state level, coordinators were selected, and focal persons were assigned. Also, the Directorate of Training at the Federal Ministry of Education (FMOE) and the states, in coordination with the PCU, conducted National Training of Trainers (TOT) and orientation workshops (training in school-based 3/29/2021 Page 1 of 5 The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Sudan Basic Education Emergency Support (P172812) management) at the state, local, and school levels. In addition, the project supported developing and reviewing action plans for all schools. Furthermore, the Intermediary Support Providers (ISPs) to distribute school grants have been hired. ISPs are to support almost 5,000 schools in 84 localities or around 30 percent of target schools. The rest of the localities have opened bank accounts to receive the funds. Once transferred to the locality bank account, the funds are distributed to schools.
