The Government of Mauritania underlined its commitment to the Program Development Objectives of the DPF series through its continued efforts and work towards achieving reforms planned under DPF2. This commitment was also highlighted as part of the Letter of Development Policy of the COVID-19 emergency DPO. Together with the World Bank team, the concept for an updated reform matrix to further improve the business environment and strengthen human capital through effective education, skills development and resilience in face of climate related shocks (droughts) has been elaborated and agreed in March 2020. Since April 2020, further implementation has been put on temporary hold due to the urgent need for COVID-19 crisis management and mitigation. Since then, the Government took unprecedented and comprehensive containment measures and announced a Multisectoral response Plan to contain the health and socio-economic effects of the pandemic. The World Bank is supporting Mauritania through the preparation of a COVID-19 emergency Development Policy Operation to strengthen the response to the pandemic, help protect the most vulnerable, and lay the foundations for recovery by supporting SMEs and improving debt transparency.
