 Description                                                        Country Challenge
                                                                    The project provides additional financing to an earlier
 Purpose: To provide a more efficient and cleaner
 suburban rail transportation system.
                                                                    Transit System Project for Rio de Janeiro (RJ) for placing
                                                                    the freight and transport systems in a lower carbon growth

                                                                    The project supports acquisition of 60 electricity-powered

 IBRD Financing: US$600 million                                     (Supervia). Bicycles are also to be acquired for selected
                                                                    stations. The system is expected to especially benefit the
                                                                    poor populations who rely on public transportation by
                                                                    reducing travel time, in particular when switching from
                                                                    inefficient bus services.
