The first of the two papers in this report describes and provides representations of the patterns of rapid fertility and rapid mortality decline in developing countries. Rapid mortality decline is represented by a logistic equation for increase in life expectancy at birth estimated from World Bank data for the 14 developing countries with the most rapid declines between 1950 and 1980.
