The project's regular activities which started in 2019 with the multiple studies, have advanced and most of them are expected to be implemented through the project's provincial implementation units put in place since December 2018 and which are fully staffed and fully functional. It is noted that the average exceeds the Project target which is 5 tonnes / ha. This situation can be explained as follows: i. The end of Projec t's target would have been set by considering the average annual yield of rice at the national level which includes high altitude production where yields are very low (around 2 tons / ha); The yield increase was achieved because the Project provide d the inputs (seeds, varieties recommended by IRRI and ISABU (Mugwiza, WAB 2009, IR 87 and Kazosi), chemical fertilizers and phytosanitary products). On-time access by farmers to inputs has favored the application of rice farming techniques recommended by the Harmonized Practical Guide for the conduct of rice growing in Burundi, 2019 Edition and its technical file; Local supervision was carried out by the SRDI Comments: agronomists who benefited from capacity building. Apart from the agreement with the SRDI, awareness raising and supervision was carried out on the basis of periodic missions prepared by the two Provincial Project Coordination Units of Bubanza and Bujumbura with terms of reference. The recent yield of 6.54 t / ha from April 2020 is an average of the 2019 A(Sept 201 9-Jan2020) season and the 2019 C season(June 2019 to August 2019). Furthermore, it is recognized that the yield of season A is always higher than the yield of the season C in relation to seasonal variability. Even for the same seasons, climatic conditions are variable from one year to another and generate variability in yields. This slight variation is therefore normal. It is therefore clear that the rice yield of the 2019 C season is lower than that of 2019 A. In the 2019 season, rice intensification was done on half of the area covered by the SRDI. The other half has been occupied by maize as part of the rice-maize rotation in areas where there is less irrigation water.
