INTRODUCTION The World Bank in collaboration with the Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) - Government of Pakistan is implementing Renewable Energy Mapping Project. In total 12 wind masts are installed at the sites identified in different areas in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Balochistan, and Sinclh. Of the 12 masts installed, 11 have a height of 80 m. One wind mast (in Quetta) has a height of only 67 rn as this was the height authorized by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for that location. The wind masts were designed according to TIA/EIA 222-G and the installation of the mast was carried out according to the latest version of the I EC Standard 61400-12-1. The design was verified with detailed FEA analysis for required design parameters. After design verification, detailed manufacturing drawings were issued for fabrication of the mast and quality was ensured at each stage of fabrication including material selection, sizing, fixture, cutting, bending, welding, assembly, galvanizing and painting of the mast. Civil works at the site was commenced under the supervision of an experienced civil engineer and strict quality check of material at different stages of the work was maintained. The foundations were allowed to set for recommended time of 4 weeks and the installation of the wind mast was started after the completion of the civil work at the site. All instruments/sensors were tested via connection to the data logger before mobilizing to the site. The proper functioning of all instruments was also checked during commissioning. 2. MAST SITE OVERVIEW Twelve wind masts are installed in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Balochistan, and Sindh. The sites are located in either private or government land having flat terrain. All wind mast sites are easily accessible by any type of vehicles. MAST CHARACTERISTICS All masts are made of triangular lattice tower secured with guy wires. Eleven of the 12 masts installed have a height of 80 m. One wind mast (in Site 7 in Quetta) has a height of only 67 m as this was the height authorized by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for that location. WIND MAST INSTALLATION The construction works began with civil works to prepare the site for mast installation. The civil works included preparation of the site, excavations for the foundations of the mast base and the 9 anchoring point bases (3 inner anchor's bases, 3 middle anchor's bases and 3 outer most anchor's bases), marking for layout according to controlled and detailed criterion, preparation of steel bar mesh for Reinforced Concrete Cement (RCC) in foundations of anchor points, and shuttering work for the foundations. The civil works were carried out under the supervision of an experienced civil engineer in phase-wise approach. After the completion of the civil works, the foundations of all anchor points were kept wet for proper setting of the concrete. The tower and sensors were transported to the respective sites before the mast installation was started. For some sites, a guard room/post was also constructed for security guards on the site. 1. GUY WIRES The mast is supported by a total of 27 guyed wires anchored to 9 foundations - each comprising of 3 outer, 3 middle and 3 inner anchor points. The guy wires were checked for any defect, properly cut into required lengths, assembled with turnbuckles, shackles and thimbles. The wire clips were attached at proper positions as per the recommended standards and finally tightened to the required tension. The guy wires will be re-checked four weeks after installation. LIGHTNING PROTECTION AND GROUNDING OF WIND MAST The importance of proper lightning protection and grounding of the wind mast cannot be overemphasized. The procedure adopted for lightning protection of the mast is in accordance with the guidelines prescribed under IEC 62305. The lightning arresters were designed and installed to ensure a formation of required protection angle recommended for the mast and its different components. A total of three lightning arresters, two in goal post arrangement and one on top of the mast were designed and installed. The protection angle of cone forms 30 degrees. The foundations, the mast and each set of guy wires were properly grounded according to the recommended standards. A set of three grounding rods (measuring 10 feet) were connected to the base of the mast and equally spaced at 20 feet from the base of the mast. Similarly, each set of the 3 guy wires was connected with 10-foot grounding rods separately. The grounding rods are 10-foot long, having diameter of 16 mm and are made of galvanized steel. The guy wires were connected with the grounding rods by means of galvanized guy wires having cross- sectional area of 78.5 square mm. The same guy wires were also used for the connection of the grounding rods with the mast base. Clips were used for the connection of the guy wires and the lightning/grounding rods. 8. DATA LOGGER AND CONNECTIVITY The data loggers used are Ammonit Meteo - 40M with charge controllers Steca Solsum 6.6F. The data loggers are connected via GSM Modem PHS8-P Terminal GPS for data transmission. The data logger set ups are given in table below.
