Sindh Irrigation Department (SID) has made significant progress on the infrastructure component for flood and drought risk mitigation. All infrastructure contracts have been awarded, including 9 flood embankments and 15 small dams worth approximately US$ 60 million. 9 embankments over 200 km length and 6 small dams civil works have been completed. Work on the remaining civil works sites was suspended due to the COVID-19 resulting in slippage in timelines by a few months. However, there are now early signs that work may resume in July 2020. The Bank has provided guidance to SID on health and safety measures to be adopted at all sites. Once work resumes, it is expected that remaining sites will be completed by December 2020, well before the project closing date of February 2022. Implementation progress on the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Sindh component has significantly picked up pace. Following the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in Pakistan, the Bank, in March 2020, made available up to US$ 10 million from the PDMA component to support the government's response to COVID-19. The PDMA being the government's focal agency to respond to the crisis, made swift progress on 6/23/2020 Page 1 of 7 The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Sindh Resilience Project (P155350) purchase and distribution of critically needed medical equipment, more than 100 ventilators, x-ray machines, test kits, PPE equipment and other supplies for hospitals and quarantine facilities required by health authorities.
