The AF enabled geographical expansion with the inclusion of two new project countries, Cameroon and Guinea, the addition of a new strategic regional partner, the African Union as well as a significant scale up in several original SWEDD countries. 9/28/2021 Page 1 of 8 The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Sahel Women's Empowerment and Demographics Project (P150080) Agence Francaise de Developpement is co-financing project activities in Mali at the level of EUR 10 million and Canada is supporting innovation, implementation support and the generation of new evidence through a 20M Canadian dollar trust funds (called GIRL, Gender Innovation and Regional Learning) which the SWEDD task team and the Africa Gender Innovation Lab is jointly managing . Overall, project implementation is progressing. Results Results are progressing well, in general. The indicator on number girls and women beneficiaries of schooling interventions has increased by 33% in the past 6 months, confirming the COVID 19 response and the momentum in scaling up the SWEDD activities. The results framework was revised to reflect indicators that measure outcomes and focus on longer-term goals. Several phase 1 indicators have been achieved or were on track to be achieved in 2020. In Phase 2 new indicators, such as “Number of national and regional legal frameworks that support enrolling and maintaining girls in school, adolescent reproductive health (ARH), and the elimination of GBV and harmful practices” have been added, to anchor the longer-term objectives in national and regional institutions, frameworks and budgets. These also demonstrate the determination of SWEDD countries to sustain the development objectives beyond the duration of the project. COVID-19: The COVID-19 outbreak has significantly impacted SWEDD operations, forcing several interventions to pause, including the school- based activities and community-based learning programs. Interventions have restarted in all countries in line with national guidelines on hygiene and social distancing. All country coordination units have implemented action plans for contributing to the COVID-19 response to mitigate the social and economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis among women and girls. Activities include rapid surveys to assess the number of adolescents who are at risk of not returning to school and follow up actions to accompany the return of girls at risk. Several countries are working with the beneficiaries of the economic empowerment interventions to produce masks, while the national quality control laboratory in Chad (heavily supported by the SWEDD project) has produced hydroalcoholic gels, under supervision of WHO. During the annual technical meeting in February 2021, SWEDD countries also shared good practices and challenges in responding to the socio-economic impact of the Covid-19 crisis and continued the implementation of activities for collective action, including a regional effort to prevent school dropouts as a result of the extended school closures and support to community-based distribution of contraception.
