The higher-level objective of the BIP, to which the project contributes, is to promote sustainable land use and improved forest management in the Cerrado, the second largest biome in Brazil and South America, leading to reduced pressure on its remaining forests, reduced GHG emissions and increased CO2 sequestration. The Project's Development Objective is to strengthen the adoption of environmental conservation and restoration practices, and low-carbon emission agricultural practices in selected watersheds of Brazil’s Cerrado Biome. It is a result of the collaboration amongst the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA), the Brazilian Forest Service (SFB), the National Rural Learning Service (SENAR), and the German Technical Cooperation Agency (GIZ); and with technical collaboration of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) and the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA). 2/11/2020 Page 1 of 8 The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Integrated Landscape Management in the Cerrado Biome Project (P164602) The Proposed Project’s direct beneficiaries are the landholders living in the selected watersheds within the Cerrado Biome. It is expected that 4,000 landholders will benefit from technical assistance activities to be provided by the Project. At least 25 percent of all participants are expected to be women. The Project will also provide training to enable the scale-up of low-carbon emission agricultural practices and land-restoration practices to an additional 5,200 people. The Project was approved by the Bank's Board on October 29, 2018; the Grant Agreement between the Bank and GIZ was signed on November 7, 2018 and the project effectiveness was declared on March 1st, 2019. Project Description. The Project Components are:  Component 1: Institutional Development and Capacity Building for Landscape Management. Supporting the development of capacities at the national and local levels to plan and implement a landscape approach in the selected watersheds.  Component 2: Mainstreaming Landscape Practices into Selected Watersheds. Promoting the adoption of low-carbon emission agricultural practices and restoration practices within private landholdings and help improve production efficiency and environmental compliance.  Component 3: Project Management, Monitoring, Evaluation and Communication. Providing support for the Project’s technical and administrative management, including communication, monitoring, evaluation, reporting and auditing activities. In a crowded auditorium, the FIP: Integrated Landscaped Management in the Cerrado Biome Project (FIP: Rural Landscapes project) was launched on April 3, 2019, in Brasília. The ceremony was hosted by the Minister of Agriculture, and was attended by the German ambassador in Brazil, the president of the National Agriculture Confederation (CNA), the director of the Brazilian Forest Service (SFB), besides ambassadors from eight countries and parliamentarians. Overall implementation status: The project has completed its first year of implementation. Current, project activities are being implemented as planned, and has achieved a good pace. The Project coordination is successfully carrying out all managerial and operational procedures as well as inter-institutional communication needed to coordinate, implement and monitor the Project. So far, 20 consultants were hired to develop assessment of the priority areas and 63 long-term consultants were hired to provide technical assistance in the field; equipment are being acquired and installed. Priority Watersheds’ Action Plans: An action plan for each priority area is essential for defining the strategic performance of the Project executors and partners, working on forest restoration, applying sustainable practices for agriculture and forestry, as well as guiding and optimizing communication and engagement activities. The project managers are working to prepare these action plans. Project’s indicators are not yet fully accounted for, as provision of technical assistance and rural extension will be initiated by June 2020. The following conservation or restoration practices are envisaged: Restoration Plans (PRAs) approved; RL and APP maintenance and/or enrichment; fencing; natural regeneration; assisted regeneration; planting or direct seeding of native or non-native tree species; silvicultural systems; erosion control; terraces; runoff management; invasive species control; fertilization; disturbance removal; fuel reduction by mechanical means; re- introduction of prescribed fire; fire surrogates. The Project aims for at least 25 percent of all participants in rural-extension and technical-assistance services to be female-headed landholdings. The expected Comments: average area where conservation and/or restoration practices have been adopted per landholding is 2 ha, for an average landholding area of 300 ha.
