These rounds succeeded in providing child and maternal health services for the rural areas not covered by fixed health facilities reaching out to approximately 25,000 under-five children and 20,000 women in each round. This includes vaccination of under- five children and women of child bearing age, management of sick children, disease control and health education. The increase in Wild Poliovirus (WPV) cases in both endemic and non-endemic countries represents a real threat of re-importation to Yemen. Accordingly, this Project is in providing partial support to this core intervention. At the governorate level, long-term three-year midwifery training has been started for 145 trainees in the six targeted governorates. The trained midwives will provide comprehensive Public Disclosure Copy maternal health services including normal delivery, active case finding and referral of complicated cases. Procurement of drugs, equipment and contraceptives is ongoing through specialized UN agencies (UNICEF, WHO, UNFPA).
