In this book a selection of the maps produced using the 2014 profile data collected from the municipalities of Gulu, Moroto, Lira, Tororo, Soroti, Fort Portal, Hoima, Masaka, and Entebbe are presented. The maps are meant to support community-driven negotiation for city wide slums upgrading through the settlement and municipal forums in those urban areas.

This study has been undertaken to provide input to the Government of Kazakhstan on mineral exploration policy. The purpose is to offer advice for policy reform in the mineral sector.
... See More + It examines best practices in licencing and regulation for mineral exploration. It will review common best practices which pertain to mineral exploration on a world-wide basis. It will also provide examples of countries which have instituted best practices in their legislation and how that has assisted in attracting foreign investment in the sector. Countries which will be studied are Australia (Western Australia), Chile, Sweden, Ghana and the Philippines. Other countries are discussed to provide a necessary example of the need for transparency, consistency and fairness. These are Argentina and Mongolia. Information on each of these countries is different depending upon the transparency of information that is available. This study has attempted to show how these countries have dealt with international investment through policy and legislative initiatives.

The objective of the Sustainable Management of Mineral Resources Project (SMMRP) for the Republic of Uganda is to strengthening the government's capacity to develop a sound minerals sector based on private investments and improvements in selected artisanal and small scale mining areas.

See More + The Government has requested a short extension of 6 months from June 30, 2011 to December 31, 2011, to allow completion of renovations and construction at the Department of Geological Survey and Mines (DGSM) and the installation, testing and training on the geological equipment, systems and infrastructure to be housed the new premises. Construction was delayed due to high costs requiring a redesign of the scope of works, and problems in the procurement process. The extension is necessary to ensure the extensive investment of over US $30 million on geological information and systems by the three co financiers can be made available to investors and the Project Development Objective (PDO) achieved.

See More + Technical assistance is not an optimal instrument to implement a sector reform, particularly as in this case, where policy issues and restructuring requirements were not clearly identified, nor agreed to by the Government, neither in the Staff Appraisal Report, or Credit Agreement. Most importantly, and given the fact that small-scale mining is a poverty-driven activity, the project design should have accordingly, taken an integrated approach, recognizing this fact as a poverty-reduction component. As for project implementation, it is important to have effective inter-ministerial, and inter-agency coordination to ease the achievement of project goals, since, as in this particular case, performance tends to be affected by that of state agencies, generally under-performing private sector standards.
