This note summarizes the key findings from an in-depth analysis of the evolution of poverty and shared prosperity in Morocco. It is the result of a collaboration between the High Commissioner of Planning and the World Bank and provides the background information for the systematic country diagnostic, prepared by the World Bank in consultation with national stakeholders.
... See More + The results of the poverty analysis undertaken highlights four points. First, economic growth has been reflected in increased household expenditures, especially for those in the bottom forty percent of the distribution. Second, there has been a process of convergence in poverty rates across regions, yet spatial disparities are still large. Third, monetary transfers have increased and had a larger impact on poverty reduction, but are still regressive. Last, while poverty decline was accompanied by broader improvement in welfare, perceptions of well-being do not reflect these.

Urbanization in East Asia and the Pacific has created enormous opportunity for many. Yet the rapid growth of cities can also create challenges as national and local governments try to keep up with the needs of their growing populations.
... See More + Among these challenges is a lack of affordable housing, resulting in increasing slums, deficits in basic service provision, and widening inequality for urban dwellers. This study aims to better understand urban poverty and inequality in East Asian cities, recognizing that many countries of the region, particularly those of middle-income status, are at a critical juncture in their urbanization and growth process where potential social divisions in cities could harm prospects for future poverty reduction. The study uses a multidimensional approach to understand urban poverty and inclusion and draws on examples of programs and policies that have been successfully implemented in the East Asia region to develop a set of guiding principles for policy makers.

The objective of the Second Urban Poverty Reduction Project of Djibouti is to improve sustainable access to basic infrastructure and services for the people in the city of Djibouti in general, and in District 7 in particular.
... See More + The implementation of urban infrastructure although very important for the city and local populations may cause disruptions or even loss of infrastructure along the targeted project sites. Furthermore, in view of preventing and fairly managing potential impacts that could result from the implementation of the project, this Resettlement Abbreviated Plan (RAP) is prepared. The magnitude of the negative social impacts that could result from project activities is of low to moderate nature: Moving container; dismantling shelters in metal sheets; dismantling pens of goats; dismantling wooden and metal-sheet awning; loss of fixed structures used for parking; and moving squatters at the Oumar Gouled Square. All compensation for affected assets will be made in kind (included in construction contracts, as demolition, reconstruction or installation).

The development objective of the Scaling-Up Urban Upgrading Project for Vietnam is to improve access to infrastructure in priority city areas and improve urban planning in the participating cities.
... See More + Some of the negative impacts and mitigation measures include: (1) on-site location for temporary gathering of sludge must be to the tail end of the wind, far from residential areas and sensitive works; (2) periodically registry and supervise the quality of transport vehicles as required by the government regulations; (3) construction operations are to be successively performed by alley segment. Extensive construction operations on the entire route should be avoided; (4) use smaller excavation machine and Larsen pile driving method of construction to avoid breaking or disposition the water pipeline; (5) provide environmental training for the workers includes codes of conducts when working in public areas and sensitive receptors such as temples and pagodas; (6) avoid activities generating great noise or vibration such as demolition of concrete structures or driving of piles during class hours; (7) assign staff to guide the traffic during transportation, unloading, and loading; and (8) minimize dropping of debris into surface water sources and raising ponds increasing turbidity during construction by using proper equipment’s and applying sanitation safety measures.
