DINEPA's Project Team has launched a series of interventions, namely a number of small works (including emergency works to respond to recent cholera outbreaks), completion of designs for water supply systems in certain communities, and recruitment of consultants to support project implementation. An Additional Financing (AF) of US$20 million was approved in June 29, 2017 to respond to the damages and losses resulting from the passage of Hurricane Matthew in the southern peninsula as well as along the northwest coast of the country. The proposed AF seeks to: (i) support the recovery and reconstruction of sustainable water supply systems and sanitation facilities in the affected areas; and (ii) strengthen DINEPA mechanisms for deconcentrated water supply and sanitation (WSS) service delivery in rural areas and small towns, as well as the capacity of the Regional Water and Sanitation Offices (OREPA) to manage their WSS assets and deconcentrated personnel. To date, DINEPA has financed through the project the rehabilitation of the water supply systems of Anse-a-Pitres (Southeast Department) Point-a- Raquette and Boucan Lamare (La Gonave Island, West Department). Construction and rehabilitation of the water supply systems of Casse, Biassou, Boc-Banic and Los Cacahos (Center Department) have recently been launched. So far, approximately 17,000 people gained access to improved water resources thanks to the Project. Progress is being made as well in the design and construction of shared sanitation facilities in schools and public spaces: the construction of 6 school sanitation facilities has been launched. Repair contracts launched to put back into service WSS infrastructure damaged by the hurricane Matthew in the Southwestern region of the country have been finalized, and currently DINEPA is installing new water disinfection equipment in all 68 localities that benefited from these works. It is estimated that this emergency response activities benefited approximately 270,000 people.
