Five hundred teachers, head teachers, and Education Officers were trained on the new Grade 1 and 2 curricula, which are now being piloted in a sample of schools nationwide. Twenty UG FHS faculty have completed the course on instructional methods, and the development of the student assessment system continues to advance. The final design of the new UG FHS building has been submitted, and construction will be put out to bid as soon as possible. 11/11/2019 Page 1 of 7 The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Guyana Education Sector Improvement Project (P159519) Risks Systematic Operations Risk-rating Tool Risk Category Rating at Approval Previous Rating Current Rating Political and Governance Low Moderate Moderate Macroeconomic Moderate Moderate Moderate Sector Strategies and Policies Moderate Moderate Moderate Technical Design of Project or Program Moderate Moderate Moderate Institutional Capacity for Implementation and Sustainability Moderate Moderate Moderate Fiduciary Moderate Moderate Moderate Environment and Social Moderate Low Low Stakeholders Substantial Substantial Substantial Other -- -- -- Overall Moderate Moderate Moderate Results PDO Indicators by Objectives / Outcomes Improve teaching practices and student achievement in primary-level mathematics at selected schools IN00722923 ►PDO 1: Percentage of students with “approaching standard” or “attained standard” in numeracy in the National Grade Two Assessment. The data for 2018, which are the most recent available, already exceed the final targets. Comments: The examination results will continue to be tracked as planned, and the impact evaluation now underway for the project will provide more rigorous evidence of changes in learning outcomes in grade 2 mathematics. TBD in 2019 Baseline: 6.86% +10% Date 31-Dec-2016 09-Apr-2019 10-Oct-2019 30-Apr-2023 The first round of observations using the Teach instrument is complete. The standard for "student- centered practices" has been defined by the Ministry of Education as an average score of 3.5 or higher (5- point scale) on the Instruction elements of the Teach instrument (Lesson Facilitation, Checking for Understanding, Feedback, and Critical Thinking). The baseline from these observations in pilot schools for Comments: 2019 is 6.86 percent. Since the indicator is worded as the "increase" in pilot school teachers meeting the standards, future values of the indicator will be the difference between the most current percentage of pilot schools meeting the standards and the baseline of 6.86 percent. However, the sequencing of the curriculum revisions is now by grade level instead of subject. To ensure comparability of actual progress to the initial design of the results framework, the team will in these comments report on the percentage of the total curriculum actually revised against the percentage implied by the original Comments: target. As of October 10, 2019, 20 percent of the curriculum (two grade levels out of ten, including nursery) has been revised. The next intermediate target from the original results framework is one subject out of four by August 2020 (i.e. 25 percent), so based on current progress this target should be exceeded by then.
