Construction progress at the critical Lach Giang estuary complex, which six months ago was reported as "the one area where progress towards attaining the PDO remained lower-than-hoped", has markedly accelerated, to the point that civil works at Lach Giang are now expected to be completed by end-November 2015, a month ahead of schedule. Bend correction works at selected sections of Corridor 3 are progressing well and are on-track to be completed on time. And most of the remaining civil works are in fact already completed and have commenced operations, generating tangible economic and social benefits to the targeted areas and communities: groin fields at Corridor 1 (11 out of 14 packages completed) are already facilitating navigation by improving the flow of currents along navigation channels; berths and warehouses at Viet Tri and Ninh Phuc ports (2 out of 2 packages completed) are being actively utilized to facilitate regional commerce; and provincial ferry boat crossings (29 out of 32 contracts completed) are connecting local communities, including women and children, to markets, places of work, schools, and other essential destinations in their communities, and doing so in a safer manner. All remaining Corridor 1 and ferry boat crossing works are expected to be completed by end-November 2015. The project's consulting services contracts, while continuing to register good progress, may require a limited amount of additional time for completion beyond the current project closing date, and as a result the project implementing agencies are considering extending the project period by 5 months, through end-May 2016.
