The launch event was well received by the audience and received extensive media coverage. As the first multisectoral World Bank project on early childhood development (ECD) in the Middle East and North Africa, the project has attracted strong interest from ECD stakeholders and development partners. The Palestinian Authority and World Bank team remain engaged in a continuous dialogue with development partners to identify potential areas for collaboration to further support the ECD sector and human capital agenda. The project was declared effective on March 2, 2020 and is now in the very early stages of implementation. Implementing entities have made good progress on draft terms of reference for the first contracts to be tendered under the project. Looking forward, the coronavirus pandemic poses a major risk outside the control of the project. The prime minister declared a state of emergency on March 5, 2020, shutting down all educational institutions and putting in place severe mobility restrictions and other measures to contain the spread of the virus. As the implementing entities are heavily involved in the crisis management of the coronavirus outbreak, the Bank team stands ready to provide intensive support to ensure that the implementation of the project can proceed.
