Participating female farmers (556) represent 18.5% of the 10/26/2018 Page 1 of 8 The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report LR Smallholder Tree Crop Revitalization Support Project (P113273) additional farmers. The project has now introduced two fundamental models to rehabilitate and/or revitalize cocoa and coffee. The Medium input model involves the under-brushing, removal of black-pods, mistletoes, de-shading/de-barking of unwanted trees/shade reduction, the use of pesticides, etc, while the High input model requires the use of specialized fertilizers to boost growth and production in addition to medium inputs model requirements. The total farmers recruited based on set criteria were 1759 farmers, a total of 1942.76 ha of cocoa and 35.94 ha coffee farms were rehabilitated. All farm lands were assessed to make sure they are in compliance with World Bank Environmental Requirements. The farms are spread across six districts and 24 communities in Bong County, 29 communities in Nimba County, and 12 communities in Grand Gedeh County – the country’s main cocoa/coffee producers. All farms were geo-referenced and are accessibility using Google earth software. SOCODEVI left the project at the end of their contract in September 2017 and the trained national former staff of SOCODEVI who have been working with the operator since the beginning of the contract period from February 2014 to September 2017 were recruited as sub-unit staff of the STCRSP. The sub-unit manages the cocoa subcomponent to continue the implementation and monitoring of the project activities. This was part of SOCODEVI transitional plan. 2. Field work and technical support continued in Dube Plantation for the rehabilitation of 600 ha Oil Palm Plantation. As at June 2018, 100 ha was under-brushed and 40 ha cleared and replanted. Also, ten (10) ha are under cultivation for food crops. Renovation of Warehouses has been completed while the structure for the Freedom Mills was redesigned and built for more equipment space. The processing operation using the motorized freedom mill for FFBs earned the Cooperative a total of US$2,019.23 (L$315,000) from March 2018 to June 2018. 3. Work with the Outgrowers in Grand Bassa County has progressed under the supervision of the Sub-Project Unit Staff. Out of the 54 Cooperative members, 34 obtained land development certificates and have completed under brushing of 42.6 ha while 34 out of the 34 farmers have completed replanting of 34 hectares of oil palm in June 2017. These farmers received 54 cutlasses, 216 sharpening files, 54 rain boots, 54 rain coats, 54 wheelbarrows with tool kits and spare tyres. 4. The Rubber support in Montserrado County through MARCO and in Margibi County by Salala Rubber Corporation have reached a total of 400 ha for re-planting. 150 farmers received have received long term credit loan which has been pegged technically by Concessionaires and Afriland First Bank Liberia to a minimum of US$7,000 for the period from planting to tapping. These 150 farmers also received budded stumps, farm tools and personal protection equipment as grants support. For the 2017 planting season, 181 new Smallholder rubber farmers were identified and selected based on set criteria and their fields have been replanted. SRC also provided these farmers with improved budded stumps, farm tools and personal protection equipment: budded stumps, bags of Rock Phosphate, and bags of Dolomite, pieces of each of the following items crocodile cutlasses, axes, files, pingaline, gloves, regular hoe, and pieces of rain boots, rain suits, spraying canes, nose masks, helmets, pieces of rope. 5. The project has provided a total of US$62,390 in matching grants to 12 cooperatives for marketing and it has increased the volume of cocoa bulked to 850 metric tons. The project has also constructed one new warehouse and renovated three. 6. The Cooperative Development Agency (CDA) continued the capacity building of existing cooperatives and the newly established ones at Margibi and Grand Bassa Counties. The newly established groups are being trained on business skills and financial literacy in order to prepare them for Bank loan support.
