The Ministry of Education (MINED) is conducting a study and pilot of a new early childhood education model focused on child development (Modelo de Educación Inicial con Énfasis en Desarrollo Infantil, MEIDI). MEIDI seeks to coordinate all the education-related factors (teachers, family, principals, curriculum, and learning environments) to work towards achieving the full developmental potential of children, by aligning adjustments to the curriculum and pedagogical approach, teacher and principal training efforts, production and distribution of materials, school and classroom infrastructure, ands parent and community involvement. 11/1/2018 Page 1 of 8 The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Alliance for Education Quality Project (P161029) This pilot, which will conclude by December 2018, postponed the initiation of the In-service Teacher Training Program for Preschool Teachers (ISTTP), but will provide relevant and context-specific evidence on how to better design and implement it. MINED’s work on MEIDI and the portions of the Project that support it will increase the effectiveness of investments made in the primary and secondary education levels. In the framework of the ISTTP and based on the experience gained through MEIDI, MINED has designed, piloted and validated a new classroom observation instrument to measure teaching practices in the classroom for primary and secondary education. This instrument is based on the Framework of Good Teaching Practices, also developed by the Ministry with Bank support, and will be a key component for the implementation of the ISTTP. The first group of mentors will be trained at the end 2018 and beginning of 2019. The actual mentoring is planned to take place in the selected schools in March 2019. For Component 2 Improving the physical conditions of targeted schools, works for the first set of 8 schools are ongoing, including appropriate arrangements for relocation of students through the duration of the works. A Grievance Redress Mechanism is available to all people affected by the works.
