The project will complement as well as assist on-going efforts of key resource regulatory authorities to conserve critically endangered and highly endemic plant and animal species and their habitat in the Kihansi catchment. Has the Project Development Objective been changed since Board Approval of the Project Objective? No Components Table Name Component 1: Institutional capacity building for the management of the Kihansi catchment:(Cost $1.07 M) Component 2: Conserve endangered species in the Kihansi catchment:(Cost $4.61 M) Component 3. Planned consultancies under Component 1 have been initiated and two reports has been finalized. These studies include: (i) Environmental Water Requirement of Kihansi Gorge which, provides guidance to the preparations of Environmental Flow Assessment and its pilot application in Kihansi catchment was finalized in April 2019; and (ii) an assessment of the Economics of the Lower Kihansi Hydropower Plant (LKHP) report has been also been finalized and shared with stakeholders. These studies are important for determination of mitigation activities in the catchment and associated costs for the long-term 6/19/2019 Page 1 of 7 Public Disclosure Copy The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Kihansi Catchment Conservation and Management Project (P126361) conservation and for the sustainability of the plant. A third important study, which is underway is preparation of guidelines, which will be used to guide management of rivers and river banks in Tanzania. Conservation of endangered species activities under Component 2 are also progressing well. Monitoring of reintroduced Kihansi Spray Toads (KSTs) to address their survivorship in the gorge has continued. Unlike in the previous monitoring exercises KSTs are easily seen in the large enclosures, though continuous reintroduction of large numbers of KST to reach a self-sustaining population in the gorge remains to be a key challenge. Studies on Kihansi wild coffee (Coffea kihansiensis) have accomplished five major activities on diversity of wild coffee genotypes in the Kihansi, population dynamics and structure of existing wild coffee plants, and propagation strategies for mass production, etc. Preliminary results indicate the C. kihansiensis has potential for genetic resource for improvement of cultivated coffee varieties on agronomic, disease resistance, quality and yield. Research on the population distribution of the new butterfly species (Charaxes mtuiae) and its host plant (Diospyrus natalensis) in the Gorge has continued and researchers were encouraged to locate a caterpillar in September 2018, which emerged into an adult stage. Studies are going on to establish survivorship and population distribution of the butterfly and host plant. All the processes required to declare Kihansi catchment an Environmental Protected Area (KEPA) which included installation of temporary beacons for the boundary of the proposed area (3471.66 Ha) have almost been completed. However, the final steps are awaiting Government decision on interagency issues that need to be resolved before the boundary of the protected area can be formally finalized and gazetted as an Environmental Protected Area according to the Environmental Management law (EMA, 2004). Integrated Pest Management Plan (IPMP) packages as approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and translated into popular Kiswahili versions have been distributed to farmers and extension officers in Kilombero, Mufindi and Kilolo. The Ministry of Agriculture has up-scaled the IPMP packages to be used as national IPM guidelines country-wide. The IPM packages will improve capacity in pest management and contribute to adoption of good agricultural practices. Identification of all 901 water sources in the catchment has been completed and it has been established that 641 (71%) are in Mufindi, 216 (24%) are in Kilolo and 44 (5%) are found in Kilombero. This makes the Kihansi catchment the first catchment in the country, whose water sources have been identified, mapped, demarcated and a management plan prepared. 6/19/2019 Page 2 of 7 Public Disclosure Copy The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Kihansi Catchment Conservation and Management Project (P126361) Risks Systematic Operations Risk-rating Tool Risk Category Rating at Approval Previous Rating Current Rating Political and Governance -- Moderate Moderate Macroeconomic -- Moderate Moderate Sector Strategies and Policies -- Moderate Moderate Technical Design of Project or Program -- Moderate Moderate Institutional Capacity for Implementation and Sustainability -- Substantial Substantial Fiduciary -- Moderate Moderate Environment and Social -- Moderate Moderate Stakeholders -- Moderate Moderate Other -- Substantial Substantial Overall -- Moderate Moderate Results PDO Indicators by Objectives / Outcomes Total area in the Kihansi catchment protected for biodiversity conservation. One of the actions was to construct new concrete Comments: sterilization baths at the entrance of the Upper, Lower, Mid-Gorge, and Mhalala Spray Wetlands and at the top and bottom of the gorge. A new shed was also constructed over the concrete sterilization bath and bench at the bottom gorge. All the sterilization baths have brushes to clean boots and the chlorine disinfecting solution is changed weekly. 6/19/2019 Page 5 of 7 Public Disclosure Copy The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Kihansi Catchment Conservation and Management Project (P126361) IN00686912 ►Villages using integrated pest management strategies (cropping, use of pesticides).
