Overall the project is progressing satisfactorily. A summary of key findings is provided below: Expansion of sewerage network feeding into Zahlé WWTP (50% of loan amount). Tender for Zahlé sewerage networks (about 107 km) has been advertised and bid submission date is June 2, 2017. Zahlé WWTP is a tertiary treatment plant with a capacity of 37,300 m3/day. Mechanical work and electrical connections are completed. Due to inability of Electricity of Zahlé to provide sufficient electricity, the Government requested the Italian Cooperation to fund the purchase of generators. Expansion of sewerage network to connect to Aitanit WWTP. Very good progress has been noted with regard to Aitanit WWTP. The MoEW, with financial support from UNICEF, has prepared the detailed design to expand the sewerage network to 4 villages (Aitanit, Baaloul, Qaraoun and Machghara). Moreover, UNICEF will be funding (through a grant) the completion of a sewerage network for the villages of Aitanit and Machghara. The World Bank loan will fund completion of the sewerage network for the villages of Baaloul and Qaraoun as well as the construction of 6 pumping stations. Promotion of Good Agricultural Practice and Integrated Pest Management. The draft agreement between CDR and FAO is expected to be signed by May 25 2017. Technical Studies in Solid Waste, Water Quality Monitoring, Capacity Building, and Project Management. A solid waste expert to provide much needed additional support to MoE (including an update to the Solid Waste Memo that provides solid waste management and recycling guidelines to municipalities) is expected to be on Board by June 1, 2017. To Improve Water Quality Monitoring, the LRA, in coordination with the CDR, Waternet (a Dutch company appointed by the Dutch Government to implement an assistance program for Lebanon) and Lebanon Water Project (a program supported by USAID) are working on selecting the most appropriate locations along the Litani River and Lake Qaraoun to install water monitoring stations. The first LRA Cleaning Campaign of the Litani River will take place by August 1, 2017. BWE financial status. Since the last mission, a significant achievement has been the provision of water fees collection data for 324 municipalities / towns in the Bekaa Governorate. This has facilitated the selection of pilot municipalities to conduct public consultation to encourage subscribers to pay their water and wastewater bills as well as to encourage new subscribers to join. The ultimate objective is to gradually ensure the financial sustainability of the Bekaa Water Establishment.
