Investments to construct a fence for Tarawa airport, upgrade or improve airport terminals, navigation aids, runway lighting, weather monitoring, air traffic control equipment, as well as other key safety and security features are either under way or expected to begin soon. Sector reform and capacity building are now beginning to make progress. New safety and security levies and an increase in the departure tax to increase the financial sustainability of airport operations and management have been approved and will start later this year.
