Lesotho - Lowlands Water Development Project : Environmental Assessment (Vol. 2) : Addendum to the Environmental and Social Management Framework - Contingent Emergency Relief Component (English)

The development objectives of Lowlands Water Development Project for Lesotho are to (i) increase availability of bulk potable water in two priority zones; (ii) increase access to improved water supply services in two priority zones; and (iii) improve operational performance of water and sewerage company (WASCO). Some of the negative impacts include: (i) solid waste disposal; (ii) waste oil or fuel disposal; (iii) noise pollution; (iv) visual impacts; (v) traffic Impacts; (vi) water pollution; and (vii) influx of labour related Impacts. Some of the mitigation measures include: (i) provide adequate waste receptacles facilities at construction camps; (ii) provide drums or containers for temporary storage on site for the oils collected from vehicles and equipment; (iii) adhere to working hours in accordance to the employment act; (iv) geofence the exposed trenches with barrier red tape; (v) establish speed limits; (vi) maintenance and lubricating of vehicles should take place offsite; and (vii) regular sensitization of workers and surrounding communities of the risks of HIV/AIDS and other STDs.
