Roger Chaufournier and the onchocerciasis program: a tribute to one of its founding fathers (English)

This is a tribute to Roger Chaufournier, one of the "founding fathers" of the Onchocerciasis Control Program, prepared on the occasion of the International Conference on Onchocerciasis (river blindness) in Paris, April 1994, a month after his death. The report begins with a section devoted to an oral history by Mr. Chaufornier himself on the history of launching the Onchocerciasis Control Program. Other contributions include: The World Bank's crusade against onchocerciasis by Robert McNamera, World Bank President from 1963-1968; the health sector, onchocerciasis, and Roger Chaufournier, by Louis De Azcarate; A great man, courageous, dignified, and modest, by Marc Bazin; The people who contributed to creating the Onchocerciasis Control Program, by Abdou Diouf, President of Senegal; Roger Chaufournier and the Onchocerciasis Control Program, by Katherine Marshall; A life in service to development, by Francois Laporte; The image of a World Bank attentive to the needs of the world, by Taki Ould Sidi, Minister of planning in Mauritania; and The sparkle in his eyes, by Albert Osei.
