Azerbaijan - Rehabilitation of Irrigation and Drainage Infrastructure Project : environmental assessment (English)

The Rehabilitation of Irrigation and Drainage Infrastructure Project, will adversely affect sensitive and protected areas, around the Ag-Gol, and Sarisu Lakes, as well as at the Samur Aspheron Canal, and the Main Mill Mugan collector, endangering flora, and fauna. However, it is anticipated that construction impacts will be minimal, and preventive measures would include environmental precautionary clauses in the bidding documents. Likewise, the reduction of drainage discharges, and seasonal drainage congestion will be relieved, consequently water logging, and salinity will correspondingly decrease, allowing positive impacts on the area's ecology. Nonetheless mitigating measures call for a monitoring program, to assess natural parks, and bio-diversity; hydrological, and hydro-geological flow regimes; soil degradation, and land use; water quality; health surveillance; and socioeconomic aspects, to comply with appropriate environmental guidelines.
