This is an environmental assessment for the Second Basic Education Project (APL) for Turkey. The plan for mitigating negative environmental impacts is as follows: During the construction phase, drinking water supplied at the refurbished schools will meet the standards laid down by the Turkish Standards Institution (TS226). Wastewater disposal will meet the environmental standards set for discharge into septic tanks and permission will be obtained from the municipalities regarding the wastewater collection system.Solid waste will be disposed of according to Turkish environmental regulations, the municipalities will be informed of the program schedule including details about waste quantities, and the disposal sites will be government-approved sites. In addition, there will be ad hoc training for some personnel who will be working on wastewater disposal and operating the equipment. Further training may be provided to ensure monitoring of compliance with the relevant environmental standards. The Ministry of Education will collaborate with other government agencies when needed to conduct monitoring and evaluation.
