Les communautes prennent en charge l'amelioration de leur environnement urbain en partenariat avec les acteurs institutionnels (French)

Within the context of community involvement, the report examines the outcome of the Urban Living Conditions Improvement Project, in Burkina Faso, specifically the community participation component. An essential factor within the project was the involvement of a group of social workers, able of developing partnerships. Project results show that demand was by and large, focused on small projects, outlining the average cost of micro-projects, and of medium investment projects, indicating some 27 percent of two villages population benefited from the project, and, that 52 percent of projects were water supply projects. The report further describes the key stages of the project cycle, based on a participatory approach, where the communities' contributions amount geared towards minimum investment costs, with the commitment by the municipal government to establish a budget covering 10 percent of investments. Most importantly, capacity building was favored by the project, focused on women and their participation in the project. Some lessons address delays in project implementation, and project impacts on water prices, arguing whether the ratio between social intermediation and investment costs should be reviewed, and what is the best way to establish the financial contributions by the communities and municipality.
