Rice growing predominates to an exceptional degree over all activities in the Lower Mekong Basin, where the economy is almost completely dependent on agriculture. Although the situation is not currently critical, prospets for the future indicate serious problems. The availability of land will probably not be able to accommodate population growth. Also, diversification into crops other than rice will require high standards of soil and water management...
