The role of the Gezira Scheme in the Sudanese economy is of national interest because of the size of its contribution to national income, public finance, and the balance of payments. This report deals not only with specific technical matters such as water, soil, cropping patterns, cultivation, research, organization and finance but also with the economic and psychological position of the farmer. Intensification, diversification, and improvement in yields all seem available but they require the wholehearted cooperation of the farmer. Considerable interest in the irrigation of other areas makes discussion of the Gezira Scheme imperative, and solutions adopted here can be applied elsewhere.
