The objective of the Sergipe State Integrated Project : Rural Poverty (Projecto de Combate a Pobreza Rural II) PCPR-II for Brazil is to increase social and economic opportunities for the rural poor in Sergipe by improving their access to basic socioeconomic infrastructure. This environmental assessment (EA) evaluated potential impacts which includes : inadequate use of machinery (tractors); damage to surface and ground water; excessive use of firewood as fuel; surface water contamination and disease vector production; solid waste management; disruption of natural habitats and fauna; erosion; pollution from construction debris; and air quality. The EA discusses mitigation measures and make recommendations, as follows : ensure natural habitats and native species will be protected; affected land and vegetation will be restored to its original conditions; develop a plan on environmental best practices; adopt proper protection measures to avoid erosion, ensure vehicles and machinery are properly serviced to minimize exhaust gas emissions; a comprehensive plan will be developed to manage hazardous and solid waste disposal; use alternatives sources for fuel consumption; recycling of organic residues; identify job opportunities for local population among activities related to conservation, protection and evaluation of the environment; prepare an institutional capacity building training plan for all participants in the implementation of the PCPR-II; before approval verify compliance with safe environmental practices for each of the subprojects; minimize as much as possible use of forest land for " mandioca " cultivation; and finally, capacity training to farmers on environmentally friendly irrigation techniques.
