Ratings of the Support to Research and Development at the International Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) Vaccine Initiative Project were as follows: outcome was highly satisfactory, Bank performance was highly satisfactory, and monitoring and evaluation quality was substantial. Some of the lessons learned include: (i) Over at least the last fifteen years, supporting country capacity to prevent, detect, monitor and respond to infectious diseases has been a consistent policy priority; (ii) The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) support has been almost unique in the Bank’s portfolio, in that it has directly supported the most basic, science driven research and development; (iii) In the second year of this project, it was recognized that based on its successful track record in developing an Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) vaccine, IAVI had a critical role to play in coordinating international partners around vaccine development for other infectious diseases; (iv) Both the financial support and the regular oversight provided by the World Bank have helped advance this vaccine
