Mozambique - Malawi Regional Interconnector Project : Environmental Assessment : Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for the Matambo Substation to the Border with Malawi (142 km) (English)

The development objective of the Malawi Regional Interconnector Project for Mozambique is to interconnect Malawi and Mozambique’s transmission systems and engage in bilateral and regional power trade in the Southern Africa power pool. Some of the negative impacts and mitigation measures include: (1) maintain equipment and machinery in good running condition, including brakes, mufflers and silencers, catalyzers and clean (power washed), free of leaks, excess oil, and grease to avoid temporary air quality deterioration; (2) restrict speed on loose surface roads to 20 km per hour during dry or dusty conditions and install signposts and road humps where relevant for safety and public health; (3) use water for dust suppression on stockpiles, exposed soils, and roads if dust generation is visible; (4) carefully select the landing area of falling trees to minimize damages to crops; (5) hazardous materials must be stored in a manner that prevents interaction with each other or with the environment or from being tampered with, accidentally; (6) restrict noise and vibration generating activities near residential or institutional sensitive receptors to the period considered as daytime (between 8 am and 5 pm) by World Health Organization (WHO) noise standards; (7) encourage the recruitment of female workers, with equal payment for male and female workers, for equivalent jobs; and (8) ensure the development of local and regional emergency plans in case of infrastructure breakdowns, especially near roads or residential areas.
