The development objective of the Santa Catarina Rural Competitiveness Project is to increase family-agriculture competitiveness while simultaneously incorporating core rural competitiveness-inducing activities and schemes into broader state programs. Activities supported by the Project will contribute to the higher-order objective of promoting sustained rural competitiveness in the State of Santa Catalina. It is expected that the project will produce highly positive effects, as environmental sustainability is a basic project objective. Some examples of positive impacts expected in the project area include: improved soil fertility; improved water quality; and greater biodiversity throughout rural landscapes. Despite the positive or neutral project impacts anticipated, some small-scale investments supported under Component 1 could potentially have adverse environmental impacts. Those small-scale investments relate to: (i) the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices (i.e., product diversification, conservation agriculture, promotion of value added products, and product certification); (ii) the adoption of nonagricultural activities (i.e., eco-tourism and traditional crafts); (iii) the rehabilitation of rural roads; and (iv) improvements to community infrastructure (i.e., water and sanitation) and housing conditions. In any case, environmental impacts are expected to be localized and preventable through responsive mitigation measures.
