China - Guangxi Highway Project : environmental impact assessment (English)

The objectives of the Guangxi Highway Project is to assist the Guangxi government to strengthen the local institutional capacity, and provide an efficient, safe and cost effective inter-provincial transport link among land-locked hinterland provinces of Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan and the city of Chongqing with Guangxi and the coastal province of Guangdong. During construction of the roads, noise pollution will be mitigated by resettlement, installation of noise barriers, and afforestation. To protect the landscape, detail alignment will be determined to minimize spots, volumes and areas of cutting limestone mountains. Restoration of vegetations will take place on all cutting sites. All plantable cutting slopes will be covered with turf. Because of the fact that the alignment goes along hilly and high areas with well developed vegetation, the construction will not have significant impact on the ecosystem along the road. Trees and grasses will be planted in the side slopes to reduce soil erosion. Temporary earth settlement tanks will be dug to catch runoff from excavation. To mitigate the impact of water pollution, sewerage treatment facilities will be set up at the service areas and toll stations. Culverts will be constructed for irrigation. To reduce air pollution, construction sites will be sprayed regularly. Wastewater will be treated and oil leakage from machinery will be collected and recycled.
