China - Second Yunnan Urban Environmental Project (Vol. 5) : Erhai Lake Basin regional environmental assessment (English)

The objective of the Second Yunnan Urban Environment Project for China is to assist in the fostering of environmentally sustainable economic growth of Yunnan Province by abating environmental degradation of lake basins adjacent to its largest urban centers and by providing urban environmental infrastructure critical for development of county towns. Construction activities are expected to generate the following common adverse impacts: air borne dust due to excavation, demolition, construction vehicle movement and materials handling, particularly downwind from the construction sites; noise from construction equipment and vehicular movement; traffic congestion; waste discharge from construction camps; excavated/spoil materials; removal of trees from the development of the sewer network; and soil and erosion. The following are some of the mitigation measures have been identified to be taken during the construction phase: construction sites, transportation routes and materials handling sites will be water sprayed on dry and windy days up to 4-5 times a day; construction activities will be scheduled carefully with consultation with nearby residents to minimize the impact of noise; traffic flow regulation plans will be prepared in advance of construction in the congested urban built up areas; sewage and other wastewater from construction camps will be collected and treated at septic tanks before discharge; materials will be covered during transportation to avoid spillage or leakage; and all contractors and construction supervisors will be required to participate in mandatory environmental and health and safety training programs prior to the start of construction.
