The development objective of the Southern Sudan Water Supply and Sanitation Project for Sudan is to (i) increase access to safe water supply and sanitation in all states by building a sustainable management system; and (ii) develop the knowledge on water resources in Southern Sudan. This project is comprised of components in the areas of (a) water supply, (b) sanitation and hygiene promotion, (c) water resources technical support, (d) capacity building, and (e) strengthening the data base and project management support. Mitigation measures include: the renovation of existing and the construction of new structures, such as boreholes, water points, construction of institutional latrines, and household sanitation facilities, training centres, water distribution facilities within the counties, and other rural and urban water and sanitation components. The project may require small pieces of land for construction of boreholes and public latrines. Acquiring land will not be a problem in rural areas and therefore is not expected to trigger the involuntary resettlement policy, the project will assure that the latrines and boreholes are located on public land.
