Sri Lanka - Community Development and Livelihood Improvement Project : environmental assessment (English)

The Community Development and Livelihood Improvement Project for Sri Lanka aims to enable the rural poor to improve their livelihood and quality of life with the objective of reducing rural poverty and promotion of sustainable and equitable rural development. The environment and ecology are considered good elephant habitat. The land area comprises mixed land uses which are not clearly definable as elephant or human landuse, and contains small extents of permanent cultivation. In the area of elephant presence, the dominant landuse was mixed, where human and elephant use of the environment overlap. Mitigation measures will be undertaken as follows. Community crop protection; employment of "psychological" barriers; chasing of crop raiding elephants; use of crops that elephants do not utilize. Surveys conducted during the project indicate that probable sub-projects will be proposed for: drinking water supply projects for rural communities; minor irrigation rehabilitation of canals and tanks; inter-village rural roads; construction of community markets and community halls; construction of small tanks and minor irrigation systems; sanitation facilities; cultivation of cash crops under special irrigation methods such as drip irrigation; animal husbandry and dairy development; small scale aquaculture; agro processing and value addition products, community forestry; cottage industries; and activities undertaken to prevent or reduce crop raiding by elephants.
