The overall project development objective of the Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Program Project (KISIP) is to improve living conditions in informal settlements in selected municipalities in Kenya. This will be achieved by improving security of tenure and investing in infrastructure based on plans developed in consultation with the community. Negative impacts include: occupational health and safety concerns, sanitation concerns from construction workers, obstruction of temporary access, generation of nuisances-noise, dust and vibrations at construction sites, potential damage/ interference with existing infrastructure, and impacts at material borrow and transport areas. Mitigation measures include: 1) deploy sober qualified staff under competent supervision; 2) prior warning to residents followed by effective management to shorten period of construction activity. Wet curing to control dust; 3) follow specifications of the occupational health and safety act.; 4) all repairs in designated garages; 5) speed control measures; 6) put in place community based management and control system; and 7) capacity building through sensitization.
