Paraguay : Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Project : environmental assessment : Evaluacion ambiental (Spanish)

The development objective of the Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Project for Paraguay is to promote a sustainable improvement in the quality of life of rural communities, by strengthen community organization for governance through a participatory approach and self-management, and improve preservation and management of natural resources and increase the asset base (in a broad sense) of beneficiaries and their organizations. This environmental assessment (EA) document evaluated impacts, as follows : deforestation; indigenous communities and degradation of their habitat; flora and fauna; soil degradation; hydrology degradation; use of agrochemicals; loss of biodiversity and loss of value of remaining native forests. Based of this assessment the EA suggest mitigation measures, including : use of machinery according to new agricultural technologies; conduct soil analysis; prepare a pest management program; good maintenance to access and feeder roads to avoid soil erosion; promote the use native species for reforestation and financing through the Fondo de Inversiones Rurales; conduct bacteriological tests for drinking water wells; reduce to a minimum possible the concentration and number of applications of agrochemicals; carryout environmental good practices workshops and capacity training programs for rural community leaders and project's participating staff; and finally, compliance with Paraguay's forestry legislation requirements, its constitution, and international conventions relative to the protection of the environment of which Paraguay is a signatory, and the Bank's operational safeguard directives on the environment, natural habitats, pest management, and forestry protection.
